Incumbent functions in the VA Tampa Healthcare System Dental Laboratory as a fully qualified and experienced technician. His/her advice is sought on a regular and recurring basis by the staff dentists. Exhibiting the seasoned judgment normally expected by this journeyman specialist. Minimum Qualification Requirements: For GS-8: Possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this position. To be creditable, this experience must have been gained to at least the equivalent of the next lower grade level of (GS-7) in Federal service. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: Use of dental laboratory material such as impression materials, plasters, stones, hydrocolloids, waxes, metals, acrylics, porcelain, and similar materials. Use of laboratory equipment such as hand tools, dental lathes, engines, and hand pieces, furnaces, casting machines, presses, flasks, and related equipment. Use of precision instruments such as articulators, surveyors, and microanalyzers. Construction of dental prosthetic appliances. OR Possess a successful completion of at least 27 semester hours of graduate education or an internship where it is directly related to the work of the position. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. Transcripts must be submitted with application. Education cannot be credited without Transcripts. OR Possess an equivalent combination of specialized experience and graduate education as (described above) to meet total experience. To calculate the combination of experience and education, determine the amount of experience you have as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level. Then determine the amount of education you have as a percentage of the education required for the grade level. Add the two percentages; the total percentage must equal at least 100% to qualify for the grade level. Transcripts must be submitted with application. Advises in the design of unique prostheses for trauma and cancer patients where oral tissue is mutilated or missing and independently completes all laboratory procedures on these complex cases. Blocks out master casts, waxes complete dentures for try-in, according to dentist's prescription, for checking final tooth arrangement appearance and speech function in the patient's mouth by the prescribing dentist. Shapes wax to contours desired in the final dentures, and to the thickness required to maintain facial contours, ensure comfort and provide proper fit. Removes excess wax, smoothed and polishes surfaces, exercising extreme care at all stages of fabrication not to disturb the position of the artificial teeth. Reproduces dentures with a high degree of precision and accuracy; carefully recording the relationship of teeth and ridge; removing the teeth from the dentures, repositioning and waxing teeth for processing. Removes excess acrylic from dentures, grinds and selects methods to simulate contours of natural tissue. Polishes dentures carefully to remove all scratches. Tempers and shapes metal with various types of pliers into various component parts which are assembled, incased in a heat resistant investment and fused together in position with gold solder. Articulates casts, adapts wax to die and carves patterns to proper anatomical contour and occlusion. Provides cutout space for veneer on facial surface where required, selects and adapts porcelain facings using a high degree of precision. Constructs and fabricates bite raisers, cleft palate obturators, fracture splints, immediate dentures, surgical template, and orthodontic appliances. Performs preventive maintenance on all laboratory equipment.
