Provides outpatient genetic counseling to individuals and families at risk for hereditary disorders, including families of children and babies with congenital anomalies (including oral and facial clefts) and hereditary disorders in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). Supports inpatient wards and specialty clinics (including craniofacial, cystic fibrosis and spina bifida). Provides genetic counseling related to breast and ovarian cancer, mental retardation and autism. Coordinate diagnostic and research testing for rare genetic disorders and syndromes, clinical management and follow up care. Performs intakes; triage and assesses genetic referrals. Educates patients, physicians, and healthcare professionals by developing educational materials and service protocols for genetic disorders. Performs other duties, as needed.
Job Specifications: Master's degree required in Genetic Counseling. Through education or work experience must have provided counseling services in cancer genetics, congenital anomalies, mental retardation and autism, and coordinating diagnostic and research testing. Board certified or eligible for certification by the American Board of Genetic Counseling or American Board of Medical Genetics required. Able to keyboard 40 wpm. Able to read; write legibly; speak in English with professional quality; use computer, printer, and software programs necessary to the position (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint). Operate/troubleshoot basic office equipment required for the position. Able to relate and communicate positively, effectively, and professionally with others; work calmly and respond courteously when under pressure; collaborate and accept direction. Able to communicate effectively in English in person, in writing, and on the telephone; think critically; manage multiple assignments effectively; organize and prioritize workload; work well under pressure; problem solve; recall information with accuracy; pay close attention to detail; work independently with minimal supervision. Able to distinguish colors as necessary; hear sufficiently for general conversation in person and on the telephone, and identify and distinguish various sounds associated with the workplace; see adequately to read computer screens, and written documents necessary to the position.
